University of Hohenheim's AIDAHO Students Gain Practical Experience in Data Science through Collaboration with Landmetzgerei Setzer [29.11.23]
Students from the University of Hohenheim's AI & Data Science certificate program (AIDAHO) recently had the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a real-world setting, thanks to a thoughtful collaboration with the local family-run butchery, Landmetzgerei Setzer. This visit was part of the "Applied Data Science Lab" course and organized by Dr. Johannes Bleher, project coordinator for AIDAHO.
Landmetzgerei Setzer, a small regional German butchery with a network of 18 shops including two innovative 24/7 shops and several vending machines, has opened its doors to the students. This collaboration allows them to explore the practical aspects of data science in a more traditional business setting. The butchery’s integration of technology in its operations, particularly in its 24/7 shops equipped with video surveillance and self-service cashiers, provides a unique data source for analysis.
Under the guidance of Prof. Robert Jung, Prof. Thomas Dimpfl, Prof. Aderonke Osikominu, and Dr. Johannes Bleher, the students will analyze various datasets. Their projects will range from video material analysis for object and pattern recognition to evaluating sensory data from the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points-concept (HACCP), and assessing WebShop and cashier data.
"The collaboration with Landmetzgerei Setzer is an invaluable chance for our students to see how data science can be applied in a more traditional, family-run business context," said Dr. Bleher. "We are hopeful that the insights gained from this experience will be beneficial for both our students and Landmetzgerei Setzer."
The students are set to present their project results at the beginning of next year, demonstrating how academic learning can be effectively applied in practical, real-world scenarios. This initiative reflects the University of Hohenheim's dedication to offering its students educational experiences that extend beyond the classroom and into the heart of local businesses.
